Chenkol is always on the list of top most underrated films in Malayalam. The film is the sequel to the 1989 film Kireedam. It continues Sethumadhavan’s story after his prison term and his life back into society.
Recently the young star Prithviraj tweeted his views on the film in his official Twitter account.
The actor says that the Central Character Sethumadhavan played by Mohanlal in Chenkol haunts him more than in its prequel Kireedom. His followers too shared the same opinion.
Kireedam and Chenkol, both are directed by Sibi Malayil and written by A. K. Lohithadas. Kireedam was a box office blockbuster and received critical acclamation as well but the high expectations on the sequel Chenkol caused it to be non-digestible for the general audiences back then.
Kireedam presented Mohanlal with the 1989 National Film Award-Special Jury Award “for portraying young man’s agony and pain marvellously and in the unique style” and Lohithadas won the Kerala Film Critics Award for Best Screenplay for that year. It was also remade into 4 other Indian films.
In spite of all this Chenkol is said to be more soulful than Kireedam. It is also said to be Mohanlal’s one the career best performance.
