On March 24, the National Bank of Ukraine did not conduct foreign exchange interventions on the interbank market for the first time in two weeks.

“In the coming days, banks will be able to replenish their cash desks in cash. The batch of banknotes will soon arrive in Ukraine, after which the National Bank will conduct the next operation to exchange cash for non-cash,” the NBU said.
In addition, the press service of the regulator said, for the first time in the past few weeks, the National Bank did not have to intervene on the sale of foreign currency. “The interbank market is balanced without our participation. Quotes were mainly in the range of 27.7–28 UAH / $,” it was reported.
The hryvnia began to decline on March 10 amid a record drop in world oil prices, as well as panic in the stock markets due to the coronavirus pandemic. Since then, the National Bank regularly conducted foreign exchange interventions on the interbank market. March 20, the NBU said that the hryvnia for the first time in the past few weeks has strengthened, and the demand for currency from the population has fallen.
The regulator believes that the main reason for the decline in the value of the Ukrainian national currency is panic.
The fact that banks in Ukraine are experiencing difficulties with cash currency was announced on March 17 by the first deputy head of the National Bank, Yekaterina Rozhkova. According to her, earlier commercial banks imported cash dollars from abroad on scheduled airplanes, but due to the cancellation of air traffic around the world due to the NBU coronavirus pandemic, commercial banks have to “establish another system for the delivery of dollars to Ukraine.”
