The second division ice hockey team Eispiraten Crimmitschau has applied for short-time work for its almost 40 full-time employees. In addition to all professionals, this also affects coach Daniel Naud, team leader Klaus Schietzold and managing director Jörg Buschmann.
“After the premature end of the season and due to the closure of the sports facilities, we currently have no way to play ice hockey and thus generate income,” says Jörg Buschmann, who submitted the applications for short-time work to the employment agency in Zwickau. The step third had to go – also because of the Corona crisis – the third division soccer team FSV Zwickau. The FSV affects 68 employees.
In the current phase Jörg Buschmann relies on the cohesion among the athletes – on the one hand from Saxony and on the other hand from the German Ice Hockey League 2 (DEL 2). 21 Saxon professional clubs from the fields of soccer, handball, volleyball, basketball and ice hockey came together to form the “Teamsport Sachsen” initiative. Those responsible for the 14 teams that start in DEL 2 exchange ideas two to three times a week in conference calls. “This allows us to simply put our concerns together at the responsible authorities,” said Buschmann.
The ice pirates also started the crowdfunding campaign entitled “Only Together”. This should collect a total of 150,000 euros – in the best case by the end of April. “According to initial estimates, this is the amount of damage that we suffered as a result of the premature end of the season and, above all, the loss of two home derbies against Bayreuth. In addition to the entry, there is also a lack of revenue from catering and fan article sales,” said Buschmann.
So far, 38,000 euros have been transferred to the donation platform and the ice pirate account – from more than 425 fans and sponsors. “This is a good start. But now we have to take the masses with us,” said media director Aaron Frieß, who summarized the names of all supporters in the lettering “Only together” on the team bus next season (from donations of 10 euros) and wants to show on the jersey (from donations of 100 euros).
