Commenting on i Cyberpunk 2077 PC requirements updated released in the past few hours, we pointed out that CD Projek RED did not indicated no AMD video card among the products to play with active ray tracing. Knowing the bond of the title with Nvidia, we simply thought of an omission so as not to upset the partner, but behind there is something more.
In a statement released to the German site Computerbase, CD Projekt RED claimed that when the game is launched, ray tracing will only be activated on Nvidia hardware. It is unclear whether this is a sort of temporary exclusive or a simple choice linked to the fact that AMD has implemented ray tracing very recently with the new RX 6800 XT or RX 6800, but that is the case.
Of course, after seeing Godfall only allow ray tracing to be enabled on AMD and non-Nvidia hardware, some questions arise. On the other hand we are talking about implementations that are based on Microsoft DXR, so there should be no software constraints. Those who have bought or purchased a Radeon RX 6800 / 6800XT or the future RX 6900 XT (waiting for the lower-end models) should not despair, as the developers of the highly anticipated title say they are working “with AMD to integrate ray tracing options for their video cards as quickly as possible”.
Next year Cyberpunk 2077 will receive an update to make the most of Xbox Series X / S and PlayStation 5, consoles equipped with AMD’s RDNA 2 GPU with hardware acceleration to ray tracing, so the fact that CD Projekt RED and AMD collaborate in the nature of things , however, the choice to deny any ray tracing option at launch for the new Radeons remains unclear: perhaps the performance will not be at the level of Nvidia, but at least in Full HD the two Radeons could get away with it, considering that an RTX 2080 is required. .
