A consortium of 11 partners working to “incorporate truthfulness into social media and the web”. Approaching the first online trial version. For everyone from 2021
ROME – Create a system that classifies the news and certifies its reliability, which supports all users – professional and non-professional – of the web and social media. This is the goal of SocialTruth, a multicultural and multidisciplinary European project conceived and developed by an international consortium of 11 partners led by the ICCS of Athens, whose motto is “Embedding veracity in social media and web “(“Incorporate truthfulness for social media and the web”).
SocialTruth it was developed to combat fake news by applying the most modern and recent technologies. The idea is that of create an open, democratic, pluralistic and distributed ecosystem that allows easy access to various verification and validation services, ensuring scalability and the building of trust, in a completely decentralized environment. High reliability is the distinctive feature of the system, powered by technology blockchain, for the control of reputation, which takes place in a diffuse way, that is without intermediaries or central authorities. This is to ensure greater safety and plurality of the verification process. After a preliminary analysis, which led to establishing the system’s functional requirements, technological architecture and ethical requirements, SocialTruth is now moving on to the implementation phase of its engine and is approaching the first test version.
According to a recent MIT study, the false information is spread six times faster than the truth, often with devastating impacts. A single tweet released in 2013 by a hacked account from the Associated Press, which reported – falsely – the injury of Barack Obama in a terrorist attack, resulted in an estimated drop of $ 136.5 billion in the S&P 500 index.
Funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, SocialTruth will be able to check the reliability of social media content and, by blocking misinformation, and will help media organizations, content authors and journalists improve their investigative activities and resources with a new tool to control various multimedia sources and thus create an ecosystem on the web and on social media of a more sustainable and safety-oriented quality. The functionalities of SocialTruth will be tested and evaluated by a wide range of end users and professionals in four practical tests in different European sites and contexts and in 2021, after 3 years of work and tests, it will be made available to the whole community.
