According to the World Health Organization, more than 80% of cases of coronavirus infection occur in countries in the Pacific and Europe.
As of March 18, more than 200 thousand cases of infection with the coronavirus infection COVID-19 were registered in the world, more than 8 thousand people died. This was announced at a briefing on March 18 by the Director General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhan Ghebreyesus. Transcript of a Gebrayesus Press Conference published on the official website of the WHO.
“More than 80% of all cases occur in the countries of the western part of the Pacific region and Europe,” he said.
He called on state authorities to prepare for the worst case scenario.
“Do not think that your society will not suffer. Prepare for it to happen. Do not think that you will not become infected. Be prepared that it will. But there is hope. There are many things that the state is able to do,” Hebraeusus noted.
He called for restricting mass sports and cultural events to “slow the spread of the virus.” This, he said, will help “reduce the burden on the healthcare system and make the epidemic manageable.”
“But in order to defeat and control the epidemic, countries must isolate [граждан], test, treat and track [их контакты]. If this does not happen, the distribution will decrease, but will return to its previous level after the lifting of physical distance measures, “says Gebreyesus.
The WHO Director-General emphasized that “isolation, testing and treatment of each patient with suspected coronavirus, monitoring of each contact should be the basis of measures taken in each country.”
The COVID-19 outbreak began in late 2019 in Wuhan, China. March 11, the World Health Organization announced the spread of coronavirus pandemic.
