According to the French virologist Luc Montagnier, the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus cannot have a natural origin. He suspects a leak from a laboratory in Wuhan, China. The office of the French president said that the scientist said no evidence.
Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 was created in the laboratory, there may have been an accidental leak. Such an opinion on CNews on April 17 was expressed by French virologist, 2008 Nobel Prize winner Luc Montagnier.
In his opinion, the structure of the virus shows that this is the development of molecular biologists, and not a creation of nature. SARS-CoV-2 has traces of HIV and malaria, Montagnier, 87, said.
He suggested that the new coronavirus could be synthesized during the search for an HIV vaccine; these works, according to him, were carried out in the laboratory of the Wuhan Institute of Virology for about 20 years.
Montagnier is considered one of the pioneers of the HIV retrovirus; he published his first work on this subject in 1983.
The French President’s office said on April 18 that the scientist’s point of view was not supported by evidence. “There is no evidence to support information circulated in the US press about the relationship between the origin of COVID-19 and the work of the P4 laboratory in Wuhan,” the Chinese television station CGTN quoted an official at the Champs Elysees.
On April 16, Fox News, citing several sources familiar with the decisions of the Chinese authorities and having seen the relevant documents, said that an employee of the Wuhan laboratory was the “zero patient”. Documents read by Fox News interviewees describe in detail how doctors in the lab tried to contain the virus from its early stages. At the same time, the channel’s sources stated that the Wuhan market of animals and seafood could not become the source of the virus, and suggested that the Chinese authorities specially invented this version in order to divert suspicion from the laboratory.
US President Donald Trump said that in America “they will study this terrible situation,” he threatened China with serious consequences if he conceals the facts about coronavirus.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said that the version of the leak of coronavirus from Wuhan laboratory does not have any evidence.
There is a consensus in the scientific world regarding the natural origin of SARS-CoV-2. Bats are considered its reservoir, and the virus probably acquired the ability to infect humans through animal intermediaries (snakes or pangolins).
An alternative point of view in an interview with Radio Liberty was expressed by the Czech virologist Srnya Pekova. She considers the regulatory region of the virus unnatural, which led her to think about changing his genocode by a person.
