The search for those responsible for the pandemic situation should be postponed until the moment when the coronavirus is finally defeated. This opinion was expressed on Wednesday at a briefing for journalists by US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo.
Pompeo was asked how he relates to the initiative of individual American congressmen, who consider it necessary to present China with a claim to compensate for the damage from the coronavirus, since the authorities of this country, in their opinion, initially hid information about the disease, which led to a pandemic.
“Let Congress decide how to proceed. But, as I said, now is not the time for mutual reproaches and holding anyone accountable,” the Secretary of State replied.
However, he emphasized that in the future a similar formulation of the question is possible.
“The right time will come. When we cope with this crisis, when we manage to restore the economies of the countries, the world community will have time to assess who was responsible for what happened,” Pompeo added.
He also noted that the United States still expects the Chinese authorities to provide full information regarding the outbreak caused by the new coronavirus disease.
“We must make it clear that the information available should be accessible to everyone in the world. This means complete transparency on the part of everyone, including the Chinese Communist Party. This remains a problem. We still need normal information from the Chinese Communist Party about what happened and what is the current situation with the spread of the virus inside the country. We need reliable, transparent information that we require from all countries in the world, “said the Secretary of State.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that the world “pays a high price due to late reporting of coronavirus by China.” He noted that it would be nice if the United States public “found out about the cases a few months ago.” The American leader did not cite any evidence in support of his words.
In response to this, the official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Geng Shuang, said that Trump’s words are completely untrue and belong to the category of slanderous statements that denigrate the PRC. According to the diplomat, Beijing from the very beginning of the spread of the disease “took comprehensive and strict measures”, having managed to suppress the outbreak of coronavirus in a short period of time.
