After the approval by the Spanish Parliament of the protocol on the accession of Northern Macedonia to NATO, the Balkan state became the 30th member of the North Atlantic Alliance.
The upper house of the Spanish parliament – the Senate – on March 17 ratified the protocol on the accession of Northern Macedonia to NATO. About it reported on Twitter Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
“The Senate of Spain has just ratified the entry of Northern Macedonia into NATO. Thus, all the Allies approved [присоединение к альянсу] our future 30th member. Congratulations, Northern Macedonia! “Wrote Stoltenberg.

Northern Macedonia (Macedonia until 2018) announced its desire to become a member of NATO in 1993, Radio Slobodna Evropa (Balkan Radio Liberty Service) notes. In 1999, the country received an action plan for membership.
For a long time, the country’s accession to NATO was blocked by Greece, demanding that the name of the country be changed (Macedonia is also called the historical region of Greece). This dispute was settled in the fall of 2018: Macedonia became Northern Macedonia. Shortly after renaming, on February 6, 2019, 29 ambassadors of NATO member countries signed the protocol on accession of Northern Macedonia.
To date, only Spain has not ratified the document. Following a decision by the Spanish parliament, the protocol entered into force and North Macedonia formally became the 30th member of the North Atlantic Alliance.
