Microsoft yesterday unveiled all the news that will be introduced on its Edge browser: from tools to facilitate the management of online searches, to reading functions, to enhancements for cybersecurity
The browser Microsoft Edge over time it will introduce at least ten new products. “My habits with the browser have not changed, but the world has changed and at an incredible rate,” he writes Liat Ben-Zur, Microsoft Edge Corporate Vice President, on the company’s official blog. And it is a sort of Darwinian evolution with forced stages that Microsoft wanted to impress on its new browser.
It all started on January 15, 2020 with the distribution of Edge based on Chromium, the software open source to which the Google Chrome browser is also due. “Today we are announcing a number of new consumer services from Microsoft, including new features in Microsoft Edge that help you stay organized and save time, protect your data and identities online and restore value,” continues the executive. “If you haven’t tried the new Microsoft Edge yet, now is the right time to try it out.”
“Collections” to organize your research
It happens to everyone to do research online and once identified a useful content to have the need to archive it for use at a later time. A click on the “Collections” button opens a pane to the right of the browser, where you can drag and drop web pages, texts or images into an archive – without having to open another page or application. This content pack can then be sent to Word or Excel, copied and pasted into Outlook or another email service. In short, it is a ready to use memo which will soon be available on the computer version and in spring also on smartphones.
“Vertical tabs” that improve efficiency
While browsing online they often occur many open tabs to browse multiple web pages of sites at the same time. However, once a certain number has been reached, the display of the horizontal tabs becomes less convenient and, for example, you risk inadvertently closing one. Here comes the vertical one to the left of the browser. The novelty will be introduced in the coming months.
“Smart copy” to save time
Copying and pasting is one of the most useful combinations, but when talking about a web page the result can become a “mess”, as Liat Ben-Zur herself admits. The new smart copy function solves the problem since it simplifies the selection, and therefore you can proceed with a copy and paste exact content from a web page maintaining proper formatting. In practice with the cursor you can select specific areas to create a pleasant collage, also made of any images and links. The novelty will be introduced in the coming months.
“Tracking prevention”, foresee the monitoring implemented by the sites
The personalized advertising that we find while browsing online is a direct consequence of the monitoring that the sites do towards us. Each user legitimately has a different sensitivity than this aspect, so Edge has also foreseen the possibility of establish three levels of confidentiality: basic, balanced and rigorous. Depending on the chosen setting, the browser determines which electronic hounds to give space to and which not. For example, you could decide for yourself a balanced way and for the navigation of your children a very rigorous one.
“Password Monitor” to know the compromised passwords
The “bad” cyber hackers – the so-called black hats – steal millions of personal credentials online every year and put them on sale in the markets of the Dark Web. In short, large databases of username and password related to digital services of various kinds are sold by putting consumer safety is at risk. Fortunately cybersecurity companies are constantly on the hunt for this data and when they find it they are able to warn users and software companies. Edge, thanks to this information, report if credentials stored by the user in the browser have been leaked. At that point it is recommended to change them through a specific section in Settings.
“InPrivate mode”, the private browsing mode
The private browsing mode is useful in many contexts, even if there is only one computer in the family and you want to conceal online searches for a possible gift. The new “In Private” function automatically clears the history of the sites visited, cookies and any data just ended the online browsing session. “In addition, Microsoft Edge is the only desktop browser that offers Bing-integrated InPrivate search. So when I’m browsing in InPrivate mode, my searches aren’t tied to me or my account,” explains the Microsoft executive. Again the news is expected for the final version of Edge in the coming months.
“Immersive Reader” to facilitate online reading
The browser is not always the most suitable tool for reading a text, even more if you suffer from some sight problem or dyslexia. By clicking on the Immersive Reader icon you create a simplified and more immediate environment. In addition, the various tools available allow you to listen to the article read aloud, establish the size of the text and the spacing, change the background color. The function is already available.
Microsoft Edge supports 4K and Dolby Audio
The Microsoft browser has activated support for the reproduction of very high resolution video content (4K – 3,840 x 2,160 pixels), the Dolby Vision format – which is a variation of HDR technology, and Dolby Audio multichannel audio. Microsoft Edge is in fact the only browser that allows Windows 10 on 4K Netflix movie playback.
“Give with Bing” to make donations
Edge has integrated a feature that it facilitates donations and thus support causes. If you choose to use the Microsoft Bing search engine, you can collect reward points (Microsoft Rewards) to be allocated to one or more charity initiatives – including that of the CDC Foundation and others that support the response to COVID.
Microsoft Edge, an easy transition
The new Microsoft Edge is available for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. “If you’re a Windows 10 user and don’t yet have the new Microsoft Edge, you can download it today or search for it on your PC starting next month as we continue the launch,” recalls Liat Ben-Zur. “And if you download it yourself or wait for it to arrive on your PC, it is very easy to switch with your favorites, passwords, form filling information and basic settings […] with a single click. ”
