Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation
The governor of the northern Italian region, Lombardy Attilio Fontana, thanked the Russian Federation for its help in combating the coronavirus epidemic and criticized those involved in political speculation on this subject. He stated this during a video bridge with journalists of the Foreign Press Association.
“We need to abandon political polemics. I say thanks to Russia for referring doctors and other staff. There are always someone, jackals who speculate on these topics,” Fontana said.
After the arrival in Italy of more than 100 military infectious disease doctors and equipment to counter the coronavirus epidemic, which were sent to one of the most affected areas in northern Italy – Bergamo – a number of critical publications appeared in the local media, in which, in particular, it was alleged that Russian help is useless. Meanwhile, on social networks, Italian users mostly express gratitude to Russia for their help.
On Saturday, during a telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, it was agreed that Russia would provide the necessary assistance to the Italian side in the fight against coronavirus. From the evening of March 22 to the morning of March 25, 15 aircraft arrived in Italy, which brought there about 100 Russian military virologists and specialists of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation in the field of epidemiology, eight medical and nursing teams to fight against coronavirus, as well as equipment for diagnosis and disinfection.
